The Best Stainless Steel Cookware / Utensils In India!? Bergner Review!

Hi Guys,

Today I am going to review a collection of stainless steel cookware that I bought from a brand called Bergner. Now before I get into the review, I think it is only fair that I state how I got to purchasing a huge collection of stainless steel utensil replacing all my old non-stick cookware for good. You can skip the next para and go straight to the Review Heading if this does not interest you.

Why I got rid of my Non-Stick cookware?

For over a decade or two the world of cookware in India has been dominated by non-stick utensils, promising us left, right and center that our lives would be far better with it, telling us we would save time and even reduce the consumption of fats & oils among other things. In all their advertising what they failed to mention was if it warranted all safety requirements for sustaining healthy human life. We all know that when there is a new technology out, there is a rush to commercialize and in the hustle of profitability all ideology is lost. Must be why Teflon coated cookware has become a worry for many an Indian consumer. Though non-stick cookware has been around for a while, India was hit with the Teflon craze for about two decades….in a rush we all gave up our earthen pots, cast iron griddles and even aluminum and steel cookware…just to make our lives easier and catch up with this fast-paced world.

Now, we are all questioning these very changes when we see diseases spike around us that we didn’t have to deal with 20 years ago or at least not at this magnitude. I am not here to give anyone any figures or any specific nos to say that one particular choice alone has led to the devastating diseases that are around us. But when we have visible corrosion of whatever coating, vanishing right before our eyes making it’s way into our digestive systems, I fail to see the need to tell anyone that it’s up to no good!

Every 6 months to a year I used to frantically run to the cookware shop to replace my corroding non-sticks, feeling a little better when they were willing to give a measly 10-15% discount for returning their crappy product! But thus, was life; until I couldn’t do it anymore! I couldn’t justify my cookware expenses over the years, it was like that bad loan taken on the worst day of your life which you can’t seem to get out off! And what do you do when there is no way out? PURGE! Get rid of it COMPLETELY, even if it meant a bigger hole in my pocket. My logic: A torn pocket I can stitch up, a heart or a lung, not so much!

Why Stainless Steel?

So now the decision was made, which other option was out there that I didn’t have to keep replacing and that wouldn’t become a future health scare. To be honest, ceramic cookware kept popping up in all my google-dada research, but I was hesitant, at the end of the day it looked and felt like other non-stick coated cookware. Earthen pots my butter fingers failed to handle! Cast iron needed excessive upkeep and aluminum came with a lot of baggage. The most economical, safe, durable and obvious choice was then stainless steel after all I’m not a cave woman and time is a privilege!

There are unlimited stainless-steel brands available in India and I haven’t looked at all of them! But an easy distinction can be made from two factors for a layman: it’s total weight and it’s built

Basics tell us the more weight the vessel is the better. As far as built, the thing I noticed was that many came with an externally attached base to add to the weight and create a better heat control within the pot. But there was a problem with this kind of built; if the pots have a fall, the base could come off or become damaged and the utensil could become a waste of money. That option had too many ifs and buts for me to risk my hard-earned money. So, I looked around for solid one-piece SS cookware… that’s when I came across the brand BERGNER. A few more brands are available in similar make and weight but I chose Bergner because that was what was accessible to me. After using Bergner utensils for a good four months to when I am writing this post, I can vouch from my experience that if you are thinking of investing in good cookware, give Bergner a try.

Bergner uses a TRI -PLY system of metal bonding where Aluminum sheet is sandwiched between two thick stainless-steel sheets. This gives it enough weight and even heat distribution that fastens cooking time. If you want even heavier cookware there is a FIVE-PLY to this version too though I didn’t find it in my city.

Bergner has two basic variants of stainless steel cookware, one called ACIER and the other ARGENT (18/10 SS quality TRI-PLY).  I bought their ARGENT variant.

Now Acier is like the lightweight stainless-steel cookware that u get in your local markets and I don’t recommend it over your local store. But, I bought all the products in Argent range which is the more durable range, in my opinion. Argent is priced up compared to Acier (which is a more budget friendly option) but the quality reflects the price, at least in this scenario!

Have a look at some of the Pics from my haul video

Pros :

Basically, they claim these on the box and I second each claim. I really felt after using the utensils continuously that all their claims are valid.
  • Great heat retention-The food always comes out well cooked as a whole even in the biggest pots!
  • Minimum oil in cooking – I use the same amount of oil as I did in non-stick cookware, and no excessive sticking of the food to the base was experienced till now
  • 2X Faster cooking - speeds up your cooking time: I felt my curries and dry subzies cook much faster. The Rice cooks fairly the same amount of time in low heat as non-stick cookware.
  • Stay Cool Handles- Now this is the biggest bonus…even after 10-15 mins on heat the handles were cool and easy to handle even though its steel! I would say the same for the lid handles too!
  • Works on Induction and gas burner- This is so important for any house hold that may have to quickly switch to induction cooking on an emergency!
  • Weight-They are heavy enough to stay put on the stove grids but not too heavy that an average built person cannot handle with ease!
  • Cost effectiveness- In my opinion this is not a con even though it might seem a bit pricey for a middle class family like mine. If I were to change my nonstick cookware every year, the Bergner products will be more cost effective in the long run, it all depends on your budgeting priorities. This is in Pros for me!

Cons:
  • Not many cons but I can say that stainless steel utensils sometimes have a rainbow effect / shading on them due to oxidation or exposure to excessive hard water…this is normal and can be easily removed by washing your utensils regularly with vinegar or lime based cleaning liquids and keeping them dry after wash!

My Rating: Guys, I am just loving this cookware! I rate this 4.5/5.0!
